“Manage your Feet”, my guide said to me as we were trekking out from Annapurna Base Camp in Nepal. It was a steep, rocky, slippery trail and if I were to hurt myself, we were a long way from medical help. I understood the importance of watching where I set my feet.
That phrase stuck with me and I have adapted it to “Manage your Mind.” It reminds me to be aware of my thoughts. It is easy to get stuck in thoughts that are poisonous and cause me harm. Becoming pointlessly preoccupied with these thoughts can result in a commotion of emotion. In managing our minds we constantly make choices about the thoughts we dwell on. When our mind wonders off the trail and we end up in poison ivy, we want to acknowledge it and then gently turn our mind again towards helpful thoughts. Bring to Mind the thoughts that Bring Joy.

After a long, steep and strenuous hike we found this intriguing rock cairn. I marveled at how this could possibly be built near the top of the mountain. It seemed like magic to me, but there was no magic wand anywhere in sight. I believe it probably required a lot of skill and effort to accomplish this feat.
